After a very long search we eventually discovered Domaine des Faures. Our criteria had been to find a very private and peaceful country home where we could enjoy all the benefits of a rural way of life while being within easy reach of the UK.

When we arrived in September 2006 Bergerac airport was little more than a shed with parking wherever one could find a slot. Now it is being developed into a still charming, but more modern airport with excellent parking and easily accessed car hire for visitors.

It is approximately a 30 minute drive to Domaine des Faures passing through the beautiful vineyards and then bypassing the delightful villages of Issigeac and Villereal, turning off the country road just before possibly the best bastide (walled) town of Monpazier.

Domaine des Faures was once a bastide farm with the remnants of the stone walls waiting to be rebuilt. Dating from at least 1673 we have spent the last two years completely renovating and repairing the manor. As is often the case it was a slightly bigger task than we first envisaged but we are delighted by the excellent standard of work of the local artisans who have been so friendly and helpful.

As we are surrounded by 100 acres we have invested in a small herd of Saler and Aubrac bullocks. They help us maintain the land while also sometimes providing us with entertainment. They definitely have individual characters. Domaine des Faures really is a very special place.

We have had two unannounced but welcome visits from previous occupants one of whom lived here as a child from 1933-1939, the other as a refugee from Alsace during the second world war. They loved it here so much they couldn't resist a trip down memory lane. One has become a particularly good friend and has shown us how to can our own pate which is great fun.

We now have a blog which shows the renovations past and in progress. Latest Blog entry 05.11.2010. Visit us at http://blog.domainelesfaures.com

We hope you will also pay us a visit and share our beautiful home with us.

A Bientot.
