The Bergerac Troc
One of our favourite things to do when visiting Bergerac is to pop into the ‘Troc’ and explore the vast rooms that contain all sorts of old brown furniture and articles from traditional French houses when a clearance has been necessary. We have found some wonderful items to use in our French home and really enjoy painting them using chalk paint to enhance their decorative features.

We have been enjoying a mild winter with beautiful days. Needless to say the spring bulbs are pushing up and we have the delight of looking at our first flower by the antique cross. This is always the leader as it is warm and sheltered by the wall.

We woke to a beautiful crisp frost. The land was covered in a blanket of white and the silence was complete. Not a thing stirred. It really was magnificent and perfect for a walk across the land. As the day warmed up so life stirred once more and we enjoyed a day outdoors.

I read with interest the very positive reviews of the play ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ at the Playhouse theatre in London. The role was first immortalised by Edmond Rostand in 1897. Cyrano is famed for having a huge nose but James McAvoy has seemingly taken a more modern and highly successful approach to the preconception of ugliness and delivers a very exciting and stimulating interpretation. Unfortunately we won’t be able to see the play.

Needless to say we watched the programme following Rick Stein travelling through France and the Dordogne. It certainly showed why we love living here and the wonderful places to visit as well as the cuisine to savour. The shot of the balloon coming down over the river which worried him for a moment is one of the highlights of a flight.

It may have been a bit damp but the market was as busy and colourful as usual. Among the vegetable stalls there was the wonderful honey stall which is a favourite of mine as well as plants for the window boxes and craft made bird tables. A warming cup of hot chocolate ended a very pleasant morning.

It has been a busy time collecting the leaves but the exercise and the pleasure of being outdoors means it has been fun. The front terrace is once again looking neat.

We have had a wonderful autumn but the season is now definitely heading towards winter. However the changing landscape is still beautiful and the countryside peaceful.
