Our visit this week to the water gardens of Latour-Marliac fortunately coincided with an exhibition of life-scale painted bronze sculptures by American artist Seward Johnson.The sculptures underline the essential connection between the impressionist painters and their environment.’Family Secret’ is inspired by Renoir’s ‘Two Sisters’, while ‘A Thought to Consider’ is inspired by Manet’s ‘In the Conservatory.

Wandering down from the house today I came a across a beautiful caterpillar. It was a Macroglossum stellatarum. Our Lavender is always covered in the humming moth so it’s good to know more are on the way!

Owned by descendants of Napoleon Bonaparte, this little known chateau in the Dordogne is really worth a visit. There are so many items on show and the building itself is a delight.

There was a very unusual addition to the square in Monpazier during the week. The display of the French equivalent to the British Shepherd’s hut? Very picturesque.

Wednesday was jazz night in Monpazier held in ‘Le jardin de verdure’. Excellent music and a really good evening sitting under the stars with the beautiful church in the background.

Our local cafe had a very unusual visitor! As you can imagine he was the main topic of conversation. Such a magnificent creature!
Concert at the Abbey in Paunat

We spent a delightful evening at the abbey in Paunat. Prior to the concert we enjoyed a picnic under the trees. Our own mini Glynebourne! It was very well attended and a wonderful way to spend a very hot summer’s evening.

Sunflowers bloom in the Dordogne

This is a wonderful time of year. Despite the drought the countryside and gardens continue to bloom. Driving through the area the fields of sunflowers can’t but delight both the travelers and the residents with their colour and cheerfulness.

Guests are thoroughly enjoying canoeing on the Dordogne. Each time they come back enthused by the view of the chateaux and caves as they meander down the river.
