The growing of plums for ‘prunes’ is a very important part of the economy of this area. Although the drying of the plums now is done on an industrial scale you can still find well preserved examples of the older style of prune ovens.

We came across this wonderful glasshouse on our visit to Le Pouthet. So many have been allowed to fall into disrepair but this one has fortunately survived.

Our guests are off on a trip down the Dordogne on a ‘Gabarre’ this afternoon. Gabarres were once the means of transporting wine to Bordeaux for export. It’s a wonderfully leisurely way to enjoy the Dodogne valleyand look up to see the troglodyte caves and chateaux along the route.

We have arrived at the time of year when the buxus plant comes into its own. After a long dry summer the flower gaden is looking somewhat faded but the buxus still looks good. It gives shape and form to the garden and is also one of the plant species that do very well here. The photo is from the Jardin de Beauchamps.
